Failing Shower Waterproofing and Bathroom Waterproofing can cause extensive damage to the rest of your home, we always recommend taking action early.
Our Leaking SHower Technicians have designed a Shower Reseal System using our extensive product knowledge and experience with knowing what will or won't work, generally speaking a leaking Shower can be repaired with a reseal.
However, in some circumstances it is best to complete a rip out and replace the Wall Sheeting, Waterproofing and tiling in the shower recess area. We have successfully completed a high number of Shower repairs over the years and have NEVER been called back to a job that has failed!!
A leaking shower can start off from failing tile grout, when the cement based grout begins to breakdown it will start cracking and dislodging from the grout joint. This then allows water to seep through the grout joints and into the sand cement screed bed under the tiles. The screed bed is very porous and acts like a sponge, the constant high levels of moisture can cause problems with the existing shower waterproofing and create a leak point in the membrane. The lifespan of your grout can be shortened significantly by the use of harsh cleaning chemicals as it is not a chemical resistant grout like Epoxy Grout. Our leaking shower technicians are accredited in Epoxy Grout installation.
Incorrect preparation and poor quality workmanship when installing the Shower Waterproofing membrane is the biggest cause of a Shower leak. While the sealant and Grout failing CAN contribute to the leak, the Waterproofing membrane, IF installed properly, is designed to isolate the moisture to the shower recess area and exit past the leak control flange under the floor drain and into the drain pipe. Incorrect preparation and poor quality installation will cause the waterproofing membrane to fail, making it useless and unable to do the job that it is designed for. That's why it is ALWAYS best to leave the Waterproofing membrane up to the experts at Dryzabone Waterproofing & Tiling
The age of a bathroom and it's fixtures, is usually the most common cause of a shower leaking, this is because of natural building movement over time and the quality of installation materials deteriorating. There are a few maintenance tips that the team here at DRyzabone can give you to ensure that you get the longest possible lifespan out of you shower and bathroom.
Our leaking shower technicians at Dryzabone have carefully designed leaking shower repairs and shower waterproofing systems that we know will last. Along with our quality repair system we also provide tips and advice on how to maintain your shower after the service has been carried out.
Our Repair Systems Include:
1. Floor Reseal
This system includes the careful removal of existing grout and sealant from your shower recess floor. We then carry out a deep clean followed by installing your choice of either cement based or epoxy grout. Once the grouting has been completed we then install new wet area grade sealant to the perimeter of the shower floor. When choosing the Floor Reseal repair you have the option to include cleaning and sealing of the wall grout, this will incur additional costs.
2. Complete Reseal
With this repair system we carefully remove all existing grout and sealant from the entire shower recess area, after a deep clean we will then install your choice of cement based or epoxy grout to the walls and floor of the shower recess area. Once the grouting stage has been completed and allowed to cure for a short time, we will install wet area grade sealant to the internal wall junctions and floor perimeter.
3. Ripout & Retile.
This repair system is used for the worst case scenarios, this is usually when a shower has a catastrophic leak that a reseal wont repair or if the leaking shower has be ignored and left for a long period of time. This repair includes removing the shower screen, shower head and tap fittings, the existing wall & floor tiles and wall sheeting. Once the ripout has been carried out we then proceed to replace these items with all new products, including new wall sheeting, new waterproofing, new tiles, grout and sealant. On completion you will have a brand new shower recess that will stay leak free for years and years to come.
The age of a bathroom and its fixtures is often the most common culprit behind shower leaks. Over time, natural building movement and the inevitable deterioration of installation materials can compromise the integrity of the shower. To address this issue effectively, it’s crucial to not only understand the root causes but also adopt proactive maintenance strategies that ensure the longevity of your bathroom.
Achieving the longest possible lifespan for your shower and bathroom hinges on regular maintenance, thoughtful care, and timely intervention. Below are some practical tips recommended by the team at Dryzabone.
Routine visual inspections can be a lifesaver when it comes to spotting issues early. Look for cracks in tiles, loose grout, or wear and tear around seals. Pay special attention to areas where water tends to pool, as prolonged exposure can accelerate material degradation.
One of the most vital components of a leak-free shower is the condition of its seals. Silicone seals around the shower edges and bathtub must remain intact. Over time, these seals can weaken or peel away, allowing water to seep into underlying structures. Re-sealing these areas annually can prevent significant damage.
The grout between tiles is particularly vulnerable to deterioration. Clean and inspect grout regularly, and if you notice discoloration or gaps, reapply it as needed. Tiles themselves should also be checked for cracks or chips, as damaged tiles can expose the underlying substrate to water.
While it may be tempting to opt for cheaper fixtures and materials during installation, investing in high-quality alternatives can pay off greatly in the long term. Premium tiles, grout, and sealants are less likely to degrade quickly and can withstand the movements and pressures within your bathroom.
Moisture buildup is a silent enemy in bathrooms. Poor ventilation can lead to the accumulation of dampness, fostering mould growth and weakening materials. Install exhaust fans and open windows regularly to keep the air circulating and the space dry.
While keeping your shower sparkling clean is essential, using abrasive or harsh cleaning products can erode surfaces and finishes over time. Opt for gentle cleaners designed specifically for bathroom fixtures to preserve their condition.
Leaking pipes or loose connections behind the shower wall can lead to major problems. Regularly inspect visible plumbing for drips or unusual sounds, and ensure that all connections are secure. If you suspect internal leaks, consult a professional plumber to avoid extensive damage.
Although bathroom shelves and racks are convenient, avoid overloading them with heavy objects. Excess weight can strain fixtures and cause them to loosen or break prematurely.
Due to the natural shifting and settling of buildings, movement over time can disrupt the alignment of fixtures and tiles. If cracks appear or alignment issues become noticeable, prioritize repairs to prevent further complications.
Even with diligent maintenance, some issues may require professional intervention:
· Persistent leaks despite re-sealing and repairs.
· Mold or mildew that cannot be eradicated with cleaning methods.
· Significant cracking or damage to tiles and grout.
· Plumbing problems affecting water pressure or flow.
A well-maintained bathroom can serve you effectively for decades, but achieving this requires consistent care. By following these tips from Dryzabone, you can minimize wear and tear, prevent leaks, and ensure your shower and bathroom remain functional and beautiful for years to come. Remember, addressing minor issues promptly and investing in quality materials can save you from costly repairs down the road.
